  Skills Training

It was in 1980 the Skills Training Centre for girls commenced in Navajeevodayam Centre. Here girls from poor backgrounds are imparted training in various vocational skills for six months in a spiritual atmosphere. The training programme includes Tailoring, Printing, Binding, Embroidery, and Computer (DTP). Apart from enabling these girls to make Christ-centred homes, this holistic training equips them to be self-supportive and to contribute substantially to the family income. 30-40 girls avail training in each batch at Navajeevodayam centre. Similar Skills Training Centres are operative in mission fields as well.

Hundreds of girls have been strengthened and motivated in life through these Skills Training Centres. Years back one girl studied here who told her horrific story. Her father had practised witchcraft. Usually he came home very late at night dead drunk. He had no qualms to try his evil methods on his daughter and he used to abuse her. She was so afraid of her father that she could never sleep at night. After she came to Navajeevodayam, she said: "This is the first time I have been able to sleep through the night. I feel so peaceful". She learnt a skill and went back home after her training equipped and with courage to face the hard realities.

Mathalampara (Tamil Nadu)

In Tamil Nadu mission field a skills centre is being run at Mathalampara village under the leadership of missionary Ajan Singh. Most of the villagers in this area live in dire poverty, as their earning from their traditional vocation-beedi rolling - is quite paltry. Worse, in this part of the country girl children are subjected to criminal discrimination and female foeticide is quite rampant. The Skills Training Centre here has turned out to be a great blessing for girls coming from such a social background.

Rajkot/Gandhigram (Gujarat)

Gandhigram has a large tribal community and the Skills Training Centre here helps the cause of tribal girls. In this centre training is imparted mainly in tailoring and embroidery.

Siddipet - Andhra Pradesh

The subsistent farmers and menial workers in this area always find it is beyond them to educate their children in their struggle to make both ends meet. Girls are particularly a burden to these poor folk. Here too, our skills training centre has proved to be a boon for a number of girls. Mrs. Dorothy Steven, wife of field co-ordinator Steven G.Kumar, gives active leadership to the training programme here.

Kasim Nagar, Sitapur (Orissa)

The villages in this area are highly prone to drought and the resultant sordid poverty. The training centre started here in 2006 April has been providing skills training to 20 girls.
