A Life Radiating God's Glory

The word glory is used to describe the greatness or splendor of someone or something. When God appeared to Abraham, He revealed himself as the God of Glory. The word glory therefore goes well with God. But the scripture says that God had crowned man with glory, but he lost it because of sin. So the message of salvation is that God wants to restore the lost splendor and glory of men. Paul writing to the Thessalonians said, “God chose you for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth, to which He called you by our gospel, for the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.” The greatness of salvation is more than the blessedness of forgiveness of sins; it gives us the privilege to live reflecting the beauty and character of God. Peter in his epistle describes it as being partakers of the divine nature.

God expects us, as His people not only to confess our faith but also express it. There is no better way to communicate the faith than reveal the glory of God through our lives. As the song writer puts it “Let the beauty of Jesus be seen in me, all His wondrous compassion and purity.” Many like in the times of Jesus are still coming with the earnest request “Sir, we would see Jesus.” The world expects nothing less than this in our life and testimony. The missions committee decided to recall a missionary from the mission field as he was getting old and seemed limited in the language skill. But the leadership in the mission field thought otherwise and sent a reply to home office, “Please do not recall him, for his life makes up for all our talking.”

The face of a saintly man never fades from my childhood memory. He was the pastor of a small church in the neighborhood. Though very limited in education and talents, he conspicuously carried the grace and glory of the Lord Jesus in his life. As a friend of my father, he was a frequent visitor at home. The humility, meekness and the purity of his life earned him a nick name ‘Bhaktan’ (Godly) Kuttiachen. A preacher noticed the radiant face of a man in the audience and as he continued to preach on the second coming of the Lord Jesus, the man joyfully shouted, “Yes, yes that will be glory for me.” The speaker was anxious to know more about that brother with joyful testimony. “Oh, that’s old glory face,” replied his informant. “He’s a Christian who always seems to be on the mountaintop.” Later Charles H. Gabriel was so impressed with this same man that he was moved to write his familiar gospel song, “O That Will Be Glory For Me.”
If God’s beauty radiating from our lives can put a song in the lives of other people, we are indeed blessed of the Lord..

From Glory to Glory

But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord (2Cor.3:18).

Glory is a wonderful word replete with meanings like majesty, splendour and wholeness. Man, the paragon of all creations lost his glory when he sinned in the garden of Eden and that made him run from the presence of God and hide. A man without the glory of God will always suffer shame. The land he stood on was also divested of its glory and was cursed. Where there is lost glory, there is indeed ugliness, defeat and shame.

In the Old Testament the glory of God is linked with the Lord’s self-revelation. Thus in Exodus it reveals his character and goodness. When Moses begged God to show His glory the Lord said, “I will cause all my goodness to pass in front of you, and I will proclaim my name the Lord in your presence. I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion” (Ex.33:19-20).

The glory of God also implies his presence among his people. The OT often links God’s glory with His presence among Israel in the tabernacle and temple. Similarly in the New Testament also glory of God is associated with His essential nature which has its fullest expression in Jesus. It is through his nature and actions we discover the splendor of God. The writer of the Book of Hebrews says “he is the reflection of God’s glory and the exact imprint of God’s very being”(1:3).

Though Jesus’ whole life was a mani festation of God’s glory there were several occassions when he revealed it in a special way. At the marriage of Cana Jesus revealed his glory by showing his adequacy.

On the Mount of Transfiguration for a brief moment he removed his earthly veil and showed his heavenly splendour. Then ultimately on the Cross Jesus revealed the absolute glory of God, the power of God, the purity of God and the goodness of God to the extent that even the centurian said, “Truly he is the son of God.”

Man has a certain amount of ascribed glory, that of his achievements. But all those things in which human beings take pride fade to nothingness before the glory of God. “All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass, the grass withers and the flower falls”(1 Pet.1:24).

Now, what is the secret of receiving true glory?
I. Turn to God, who is the source of true glory. Paul here explores the great wonder that we are on a journey toward glory. It is the spirit of God that prepares us for this. At the time of our rebirth God seals us with his Spirit and the glory that is with the Lord comes to us through the medium of the Spirit. Where there is the Spirit of God, there is freedom and growth. To grow we must have life and to have life we must have the Spirit of God. Speaking of the work of the Holy Spirit in us, Paul says we reflect the Lord’s glory through our personal relationship with Jesus, the very splendor of God’s presence. Because of his presence, we are new creations, and are on a journey towards the very likeness of Christ, to share the glory of God. So as believers what sho uld be our response to receive the glory of God available to us through the ministry of the Spirit? We need to turn back to the Lord over and over again. There are areas we need to turn away from and we must cultivate the spiritual discipline to turn back to the Lord (II Chro.7:14).

Moses desperately wanted to see the glory of God. There was an urgency and childlike imploring in his asking. Until it becomes our heart’s burning desire we are not likely to be prepared for receiving the glory. A Chorus goes like this:

Turn your eyes upon Jesus look full in His wonderful face and things of this earth will go strangely dim. If we look at the face of Jesus and we will never be the same for we have seen his glory. If we ever see him in his glory we will not be able to take our eyes off him. He is the most beautiful and fairer than thousands. If we gasp for the Lord he will come to us. If we gasp for his glory the heavenly Father will shower it upon us.

II. Remove the veils that hinder the glory from being reflected upon us. There may be veils in our lives that prevent us from seeing the Lord’s glory. Jesus with his death tore the veil that prevented entry into the holiest, where God dwells, and opened it for all. So, because of Jesus we can “approach the throne of grace with confidence.” (Heb. 4:16). Jesus also opened the veil of his body (Heb. 10:20) and opened a new way. But the eyes of many a man and woman are blinded by the god of this earth. The Evil One might have put his veils upon our minds, heart and all our person. We have to remove the veil of the hardness of our hearts and the unbelief and doubt in our minds. The spirit of complaint and murmuring are also to be done away with. Pharisees and Saducees though they saw Jesus in person they did not see him as they should have seen him. They heard his teachings but they did not hear him as they should have heard him. They had the veil of self righteousness. They had the veil of pride and self-seeking.

This was the tragic thing that happened to them. Jesus stood next to them, He spoke directly to them. Yet they failed to recognize

him and be partakers of his glory. Only by removing the veil of our eyes, hearts and minds can we see the son of man in all his splendour and receive glory from him.

As we turn to God in all humility and lay bare our hearts and souls before him the indwelling Spirit of God quickens the work of transforming us into his own image from glory to glory. When God’s glory is rubbed on to us the people around will definitely know. The more we love the Lord the better we will paint him before the world. The world is not looking for miracles. They are looking for Jesus walking on the streets of our villages, towns and cities. They will be pleased to see more and more men and women who have taken the name of the Lord radiate the glory of Jesus. The captain of our salvation, our Lord is leading many children to glory. Even though many of our desires may remain unfulfilled, God will never keep his glory from his people who ardently desire for it. As we desire, God will satisfy us. And the beauty of Jesus will be shone through us. Also because Jesus is within believers, affecting their inner transformation, we see his face in one another’s lives, for we are being transformed “into his likeness” by the Spirit’s work.

The world is impressed by appearances. Wealth and position are equated with glory and fame is eagerly sought. But the Christian has a different set of values. To the believer, true glory is found only in the splendour of God. It is recognized as his character is displayed in his actions. And we glorify God by being channels through which the Holy Spirit can communicate the Lord to those who are around us. And let it be our prayer, “O Lord you bestow glory on me and lift my head” (Ps. 3:3) and let it be our desire that the spirit of God will transform us into His image.
